Pigs and sheep

In Norwegian trials over 7 years, total milk yield was 6% higher in dairy cows fed 3% Ascophyllum in a fortified seaweed meal than in controls.

Mastitis was markedly below the 90% incidence in the control animals.

A reduction in the number of services needed per conception and an increase in no returns were also indicated
A. Jensen, J. Minsaas, Norwegian Institute of Seaweed Research, Trondheim University 1960.

Recommended daily inclusion 2.5 - 10 grams per animal per day.

In Norwegian trials 3% ground barley given to fatteners from 20kg to slaughter was replaced by 3% Ascophyllum seaweed in a limited ration designed according to the standard curve for pigs.

All rations were supplied with the requisite calcium and phosphorus, but no trace elements or vitamins were given except naturally in the seaweed. The pigs showed better growth and feed conversion than the control group, with no difference in carcass quality.

With the exception of extra vitamin D, there was no mineral supplementation and there were no adverse effects
