Iodine is one of the most important minerals for health, and among the most underrated - not least for hormone production and regulation, particularly in the thyroid gland. Various studies indicate that iodine from seaweed may be of nutritional value in a range of health conditions - see the official permitted EU health claims in the next column.
Each capsule contains 100% whole Seagreens human food quality Ascophyllum nodosum seaweed, which typically contains 350 micrograms of natural iodine.
We carefully micronise this iodine-rich species as a raw food and seal it in a vegetable capsule.
Recent research by Glasgow University compared Seagreens Ascophyllum to a commonly used artificial source of iodine - potassium iodide. The study found that although both forms are highly bioavailable, the potassium iodide peaks and is quickly excreted from the body, whereas the Seagreens iodine is more gradually absorbed and remains present for longer.
It has the added benefit of being Iodine '+'. The Plus is that Seagreens naturally contains all the other minerals and micronutrients needed for the proper transport and metabolism of iodine including selenium, tyrosine, zinc, copper, vitamins A, B2, B3, B6 and C.
In contrast, our Food Capsules contain a typical 195 micrograms of iodine per capsule allowing an equivalent daily intake of iodine but with double the balance of all the other nutrients. This may be more suitable in children, pregnancy and in therapeutic protocols.
The following official European Food Standards Agency claims can be made because the total content of Seagreens contributes to more than 15% of the recommended daily allowance RDA for iodine. Please click here to see or download the full details.
Iodine contributes to normal thyroid, nervous system and cognitive function, the normal growth of children, normal energy-yielding metabolism, and the maintenance of normal skin.

Believe it or not...
When we introduced these capsules in 2000 at the request of vegan and vegetarian customers who don’t eat meat, eggs or dairy foods (the main sources of iodine) we discovered that we had made the only additive-free, iodine-rich 100% Organic dietary supplement on the market. And as far as we know, it still is!
