2010 Crown Estate Business Award for 'marine enterprise'

The Crown Estate awarded Seagreens joint venture partner, Hebridean Seaweed Company, based near Stornoway on the Isle of Lewis in Scotland, its 2010 Business Award for Marine Enterprise. Malcolm Macrae, Technical Director, collected the Award in London in July 2010 (picture opposite). Under the joint venture, seaweed for human consumption is produced exclusively for Seagreens® using its special cutting vessles developed in Norway and its proprietary methods of selection, harvesting, processing and handling.

“In just four years the company has grown to be Scotland’s largest seaweed producer", the judges commented, "a true model of sustainability, harvesting a renewable resource in an environmentally responsible way and creating much needed year round jobs on the Isle of Lewis. The company has adopted an innovative approach blending traditional and modern cutting methods and is strongly committed to quality. The Crown Estate is delighted to recognise its achievements with this award for excellence."
